As a buzzword, ‘data’ is in the ascendant, with its proponents evangelising the prospect of it enabling a revolutionary and rewarding future for society. We’re increasingly familiar with how distant entities like governments, social networks and tech companies create and use data about us; it’s easy to feel detached and disenfranchised from these activities – but what about data that can be produced and owned at the other end, in our communities?
Andy Dickinson is an academic based at the University of Central Lancashire where he has been teaching digital and online journalism since 1999. He is a well known and respected voice in the digital journalism community and works with a range of organisations both nationally and internationally developing digital strategy and training.
Andy is currently the acting director of the Media Innovation Studio, an international innovation and research lab based at UCLan. The studio is focussed on new technologies and media innovation with a strong emphasis on community engagement. Recent studio projects include research on sustainability in hyperlocal media; community-led design, and civic use of drones.
Andy’s current research interests include the use of open data and open government data, especially in the growing field of data journalism.
For his visit to Blackpool Speakeasy he’ll be talking about the projects he’s worked on and exploring the idea of the value of data to local communities, and the ways in which individuals and communities can have more control of their data – maybe even creating data for themselves to create social ties, strengthen local democracy and improve the quality of information flowing through communities.

The talk takes place from 7.30pm-8.30pm on 10th May in the first-floor function room at the historic Raikes Hall pub, Liverpool Road, Blackpool FY1 4HE (map below).
